Bangor Dyslexia Unit January 2002

The Bangor Dyslexia Unit is one of the most well-known dyslexia research units in the world. I helped bring a web presence to the unit that had not strongly existed before. This page contains the following sections:

Description

Accessibility

This was arguably the first website I developed where the concept of 'accessibility' was high on the agenda - at least for the target readership. The timescales for this project were very tight, and the code needed to be maintainable by admin staff, so the result had to be kept simple.

The page was designed to help cater for a dyslexic readership. Body text was put against a sandy background colour, and letter spacing was increased as per recommendations from the Unit Director. Additionally, link text was set as a light colour on a dark background, to help differentiate it from the body text.

With hindsight of better coding practices, a lot more could have been done to help make this website truly 'accessible', and looking at the text, more could have been done to improve its readability. This however was a big learning curve for me at that time, and it served well as an early education for me in the area of accessibility.

Other

From a content perspective, I took an active role in advising what sort of information should appear on the website. My academic clients were not accustomed to marketing their information, and I provided consultation in how the website should communicate with its target readership.

Additionally, the website required translation into Welsh (see second screenshot), and I supported the production of the website into this format as well.
